The story takes place in 1937, when Emanuel, a man in his early 20s, was confined to a nursing home on the Black Sea coast with tuberculosis of his spine, wearing a cast and unable to move. During this time, he fell in love with another patient, Solanji, who was slowly withering but unwilling to give in to their minds, and they talked about literature, philosophy, and history, trying to live a meaningful life. In 1939, this masterpiece was published in Romania, and Max Brech died at the age of 29 after 10 years of agony.
